NEW YORK, Oct 21 (Reuters) – Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones sees an opportunity for his struggling team in a wide-open NFC East and said on Wednesday he was prepared to make moves before next month’s trade deadline.
The Cowboys and Philadelphia Eagles are both 2-4, the New York Giants lead the division at 3-2-1 and the Washington Commanders sit bottom at 1-4-1 after the NFC East went winless for a second consecutive week.
“It gives me a lot of promise. I see opportunity. And I see it legitimately because I know the things that we have the potential to do, both with our talent (and) with our schemes and adjustments,” said Jones.
“I’m frustrated and I’m disappointed that we’re sitting here with this record… the mirror is what everybody’s got to look for.”
As he was swarmed by reporters in a Manhattan hotel lobby following the two-day fall NFL owners’ meeting, Jones said Dallas could strengthen ahead of the November 10 trade deadline.
“I don’t have a specific (target). But certainly, I’ll be real clear: I would be active if we could get a chance to help the team this year,” he said.
Jones added, however, that the Cowboys could become sellers if the deal is right.
The unwanted distinction of going winless through two consecutive weeks was made possible by the Giants and Commanders’ Week 5 encounter, when an inexplicable Washington clock-management error left the game tied at 27-27.
