APPLETON, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — The suspect in a shooting at a Grand Chute hotel was just released from a Florida prison last month, according to a criminal complaint filed Wednesday.
Ondra Toombs, 47, was charged with attempted homicide and other counts for the Aug. 8 shooting. He made an initial court appearance Wednesday, where a $1 million cash bond was set. He returns to court Aug. 21 for a preliminary hearing.
According to the criminal complaint, police were called to the Budget Inn on Westland Drive late Friday for a woman with a gunshot wound to the chest. Witnesses told police the two argued and Toombs shot the woman.
After his arrest, Toombs told police someone had shot his girlfriend and he was looking for the suspect, the complaint states.
Toombs then allegedly attacked officers at the Grand Chute Police Department and caused more problems at the jail.
“Once at the Outagamie County Jail, Ondra continued to be defiant to jail staff, made comment of physically assaulting staff if entry was made to his cell to retrieve clothing. Ondra took his shirt off and flushed it down the toilet in his cell, which resulted in jail staff having to turn off the water and use a tool to open the sewer pipe to look for his shirt,” the complaint states.
This was not Toombs’ first encounter with police.
“The defendant was released from prison in Florida on or about July 5, 2025. He has 33 prior convictions, with approximately 16 felony convictions including multiple burglary convictions, Larceny, Grand Theft from a Dwelling, Felony Drug convictions, and countless others,” the complaint states.
