BROWN COUNTY, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — The DNR heard comments Tuesday on Brown County’s plan to allow the use of contaminated soils at the south landfill.
According to the DNR notice: “Brown County Port & Resource Recovery Department is requesting approval to increase the contaminant concentration limits to be 10 times the industrial RCLs to allow for contaminated soils accepted at the BCSLF to be used beneficially. The proposal does not modify the landfill’s ability to accept the contaminated soils for direct disposal at the landfill.”
The town of Holland, where the landfill is located, is among those opposed to the idea.
“The Town’s position is that, because the County has not demonstrated that its proposal will be safe, it should be denied. The Town’s priority is the safety of its residents, not the efficiency or profitability of the landfill,” the town’s “talking points” state.
No decision was made Tuesday.
The DNR will be accepting written comments until Nov. 11. Written comments can be submitted to: Emily.Storm@wisconsin.gov.
The DNR will make a decision on the plan of operation within 90 days after that, or by Feb. 9.
