(WTAQ-WLUK) — Senate Majority Leader Devin LeMahieu says the Senate would need two more votes to revive Wisconsin’s failed $1.8 billion budget surplus deal.
Last month, 15 Democratic state senators were joined by three Republican state senators in voting against the measure, which would have sent $850 million of rebate payments to taxpayers, provided $617 million to public schools and eliminated the individual income tax on cash tips and overtime pay.
LeMahieu wrote Thursday:
If two more Senators decide to stand with the 80% of Wisconsinites who support this compromise, the Senate will meet to send the proposal to the governor.
Those who opposed the bill argued it was ‘reckless’ and would have created a $2.9 billion deficit.
A recent Marquette poll showed 80% of Wisconsinites, including 82% of Democrats, 77% of Republicans, and 81% of independents supported the deal.
