33-year old Trevor Salewsky (Oconto County Jail)
MARINETTE, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — A competency exam was ordered Thursday for the man who allegedly brought a loaded gun and knives to a school blood drive in Peshtigo.
Trevor Salewsky, 34, faces eight counts, including possession of a firearm on school grounds, for the Jan. 26 incident.
He was scheduled for a preliminary hearing and arraignment Thursday, but defense attorney Randall Petrouske raised the issue of competency. That is a reference to his client’s ability to understand the court proceedings and assist in his own defense.
The court ordered a psychiatric review. Results will be discussed July 13, court records show.
According to the criminal complaint, while he was being arrested, Salewsky told a police officer the “Sheriff’s Department is trying to murder me.” He also asked the officer if he was trying to kill him.
The complaintwent on to say Salewsky escaped from handcuffs in the back of a squad vehicle using a key he had hidden. When he arrived at the jail, Salewsky allegedly attacked a police officer and tried to grab the officer’s Taser. Another correctional officer used his own Taser to help subdue Salewsky. In all, five correctional officers were needed to get Salewsky under control. The arresting officer was injured and placed on light duty.
The handcuff key was found in Salewsky’s underwear.
Police said they learned from Salewsky’s mother he had been diagnosed with epilepsy as a child, but had stopped taking medication at age 13 at the recommendation of a doctor.
