APPLETON, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — One person is dead after a loaded dump truck rolled over onto another vehicle on an Appleton street.
Around noon Thursday, a heavy-duty tow truck was exiting northbound Wisconsin Highway 441 onto E. Calumet Street via the off-ramp when the wrecker left the roadway and entered the median, causing the dump truck it was towing, which was filled with sand, to become detached. The dump truck then rolled over and collided with a vehicle that was stopped in westbound traffic on E. Calumet Street.
Emergency personnel tried to render medical aid to the driver of the vehicle, but the person was pronounced dead at the scene.
A joint investigation is underway by the Appleton Police Department and Wisconsin State Patrol.
As of 5 p.m., police said E. Calumet Street remains closed between Wisconsin Highway 441 and Stoney Brook Drive. Additionally, the northbound Calumet Street exit from northbound 441 will remain closed for traffic exiting eastbound E. Calumet Street.
