FISH CREEK, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — Some might call it a new look for an old landmark.
The iconic Eagle Bluff Lighthouse is open for another season in Door County, and the experience includes some upgrades.
“Not only did we restore the keeper’s residence, the light tower, the oil house and the privy — all those buildings were existing — we also reconstructed the barn and summer kitchen that used to be here on the property, but were lost over time,” said Amy Frank, executive director of the Door County Historical Society.
Frank said the reconstructed barn also serves as the new welcome center.
“It makes such a difference because it’s much more spacious. There’s more room to maneuver around. It’s not as crowded as it was before. We’re able to offer more things in our gift shop, and it’s just a more pleasant experience for people when they come to the light station,” she said.
Eagle Bluff Lighthouse is located on the waters of Green Bay within Peninsula State Park. Officials said about 18,000 people tour the lighthouse each year. David Popp and his wife, Ingrid, who hail from Waterford, visited the site Friday.
“They were working on building the barn section of the lighthouse the last time we were here. Oh my gosh, it is so amazing what they have done. The restoration work — it’s actually all new, from the ground up. It’s just wonderful,” said David.
“It’s a piece of history. To think about how they lived every day and how important the lighthouse keeper’s job was and the discipline involved, and the hard work and perseverance. I don’t know, it’s just inspiring,” said Ingrid.
Frank agrees.
“I think there’s just something very appealing and nostalgic about lighthouses. To be on the grounds of a lighthouse that’s been here for over 150 years, just kind of evokes those feelings of nostalgia, and maybe a little bit of romance as well,” she said.
The Eagle Bluff Lighthouse is open daily from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. There will also be a grand opening for the site, with a restoration celebration scheduled for June 26.
