Evers declaration begins price gouging prohibition enforcement in tornado stricken areas

MADISON, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — Governor Tony Evers declared a period of abnormal economic disruption in Outagamie, Winnebago, Forest, and Vilas counties Friday. The declaration was made in response to the storms which caused the EF-3 tornado which tore through communities like Menasha, Fox Crossing, and Neenah late last month.

Being under a period of abnormal economic disruption means the Wisconsin Department of Agriculture, Trade, and Consumer Protection is directed to enforce prohibitions against price gouging on essentials and lodging.

Crews have worked for nearly two weeks clearing debris in the Fox Valley. The city of Menasha estimates at least 100 homes are currently uninhabitable, forcing residents to live out of hotels for the time being. Groups like the Red Cross and United Way Fox Cities are working to raise and distribute funds as people clear away damage and rebuild.

“Folks who’ve just lost their family homes and businesses shouldn’t have to worry about paying outrageous prices for simple necessities like a place to sleep, food to eat, or any other everyday essentials,” said Gov. Evers in a news release. “My administration and I continue to work with local leaders in the Fox Cities and surrounding areas as folks and families begin to rebuild their homes, businesses, schools, and communities. For the communities that are struggling, this declaration ensures that our state agencies can use whatever tools at their disposal, including cracking down on price gouging on everyday necessities, to help folks get back on their feet.”
