(MARQUETTE COMMUNICATIONS) MILWAUKEE – The Marquette University men’s soccer team opened BIG EAST play on Friday evening with a 3-0 setback at No. 9 Georgetown at Shaw Field. The loss snapped a three-match win streak for the Golden Eagles, who fell to 5-2-1 (0-1-0 BIG EAST).
Georgetown controlled much of the match holding advantages of 13-4 in shots and 11-2 in corner kicks while limiting Marquette to just two shots on goal. The Hoyas improved to 6-1-1 (1-0-0 BIG EAST) while holding seven of its eight opponents to a goal or fewer.
After the Golden Eagles nearly caught GU in the opening 90 seconds with a back post header off a set piece, the Hoyas broke through in the 17th minute when Matthew Van Horn chested in a cross from Mateo Ponce Ocampo to give Georgetown a 1-0 advantage. Marquette weathered sustained pressure through the remainder of the opening half, with goalkeeper Cameron Simpson recording four first-half saves to keep the Golden Eagles within a goal at the break.
After halftime, Marquette generated its first shots of the evening and remained within striking distance until the 73rd minute. Mitchell Baker doubled Georgetown’s lead with a pass through the defense from Ocampo. The Golden Eagles nearly pulled back within one almost immediately but but a cross that beat GU’s backline was just out of reach of Joey Buchanan’s head. Georgetown tacked on a third minutes later as Noah Strellnauer to put the match out of reach at 3-0.
