KEWAUNEE COUNTY, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — Work continues to make improvements to a popular park and zoo along the Lakeshore.
From a new exhibit home to seven different species of pheasants, to a fenced-in pen for some white-tailed deer, Kewaunee County Promotions and Recreation Director Dave Myers says Bruemmer Park and Zoo is a hidden gem.
“A lot of people come through the park. It’s a stop. You get people come to Kewaunee County and look at the parks. It’s an easy stop. And it’s a nice place to take a break,” said Dave Myers, Kewaunee County Promotions and Recreation Director.
But at the top of one hill, sits a structure that officials say needs to be replaced.
“Building is very old. Right now, the one major issue there is that we have to shut down everything in winter,” said Myers.
Myers says as part of a Saturday fundraising effort called Zoobilee, the Zoological Society of Kewaunee County hopes to help.
“The new building would be something we could have. We’d have open year-round. The people could use the facilities year-round and have a space to get inside. And it would be a nice spot for us to have some smaller exhibits, and things people can enjoy through spring through winter,” he said.
Myers says the total price tag is about $2 million, with the Zoological Society raising about $650,000.
“The planning stage is done. Right now hopefully when fundraising is complete, we go into the next stage is getting design finalized, and going from there and putting this building out for bids. Timeline on that I’m unsure, but the sooner the better for us,” he said.
It is the 15th year of the Zoobilee fundraising event.
The effort is supported by the Zoological Society of Kewaunee County.
