WINNECONNE, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — It appears Winneconne’s embattled school district administrator is stepping down.
An agenda for a special school board meeting Wednesday night includes an item called “Retirement of the District Administrator.” The meeting is set for 6 p.m. at the library of Winneconne Middle School, 400 N. 9th Ave.
District Administrator Peggy Larson has been on paid leave since August. That decision was made in a 4-2 vote of the school board. The four who voted in favor all have ties to Moms for Liberty, a national organization.
Two of those board members, school board president Kati Calewarts and vice president Dean Ackmann, are currently facing opposition by a group attempting to recall them, as critics cite a lack of transparency with the community and with the rest of the board, improper activity regarding legal services.
Moms for Liberty Winnebago County Chair Laura Ackmann said last month board members would not be able to discuss the situation because of confidentiality laws.
“When the previous school board chose not to help parents with issues, we provided them support and helped amplify their situations,” she said in August. “I will never apologize for helping a parent or a child when their rights are being ignored or violated.”
On the first day of classes Sept. 2, dozens of students gathered outside of the high school in the morning, wearing t-shirts that read, “I stand with Peg.”
