(GREEN BAY ATHLETICS) HIGHLAND HEIGHTS, KY – The Green Bay women’s soccer team and Northern Kentucky played to a 1-1 draw Sunday on the road at NKU Soccer Stadium. The two teams will split the points, with the Phoenix moving to 10 points in the Horizon League standings. The draw moved Green Bay’s record to 8-1-3 overall and 3-1-1 in Horizon League play.
“We earned a very tough point on the road today,” said head coach Matt Kagan. “I thought we played a great first half and had to fight through fatigue in the second half to secure a result. I’m very proud of the team’s commitment and grit!”
HOW IT HAPPENED
The two teams went back and forth in the first half, with Green Bay slightly outshooting Northern Kentucky 5-4. The Phoenix was the first team to strike thanks to a second goal in as many games from Grace Downey in the 30th minute. Bella Brozek found Downey and was credited with an assist. GB held that lead for about 13 minutes before the Norse equalized right before half. A Phoenix foul in their own box was called, resulting in an NKU penalty kick, which Riley Evans converted and tied it at one.
The Norse used that momentum and carried into the second half, controlling much of the tempo in the final 45 minutes. NKU outshot GB in the frame 9-1, but the Phoenix defense held strong, securing the draw.
GAME NOTES
- Downey received a yellow card in the 79th minute.
- Anna Scott totaled three saves for the Phoenix out of 13 total Norse shots. NKU outshot GB 13-6, with both teams putting four shots on goal.
COMING UP
Green Bay will look to get back in the win column next Saturday when they host IU Indy for Senior Day at Aldo Santaga Stadium at 1 p.m. CT.
