OSHKOSH, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — Hundreds of students at Oshkosh’s Read Elementary School are helping transform the outside of their building with a new mural after the school’s original artwork had to be removed during repairs.
The new mural, titled “Somos Semillas,” will include participation from all of the school’s more than 300 students, allowing each child to contribute and “leave their mark.”
“Somos Semillas” is Spanish for “We Are Seeds,” a theme tied to students’ growth and their developing ability to connect visual arts and reading.
Muralist Neo Medina said the design reflects that connection. “Somos Somillas and like connecting the opportunity for growth and that potential through literacy so that’s why you see a book on this side and a book on the other,” Medina said. “To really symbolize what it means to be a seed. What it means to see that potential in yourself and in your classmate.”
A community celebration of the finished mural is planned for next Monday.
