WAUPACA COUNTY (WTAQ-WLUK) – Settlement talks with a retired judge are planned in the civil case filed in connection with a 1992 double murder.
Tony Haase was acquitted last year for the 1992 murders of Tanna Togstad and Timothy Mumbrue at a home in rural Waupaca County. Shortly before the trial concluded, Togstad’s family filed a civil lawsuit against Haase, seeking $17 million in damages.
No trial date has been set in the case, as the parties work through motions and discovery.
In a hearing Monday, the parties all agreed they wanted to work on a possible settlement, in the hopes of avoiding a trial.
Also Monday, the attorney for Maple Valley Mutual Insurance Company said it might file an appeal a judge’s ruling earlier this month ordering it to defend Haase in the case.
The parties will return to court Dec. 18 to update the judge on the status of the negotiations.
Just as he did at his criminal trial, Haase has denied the civil case allegations that he killed the couple.
