(WTAQ-WLUK) — Republican Tony Wied has won reelection and defeated Democratic challenger, Rick Crosson. When Wied entered his watch party after his victory, he was met with cheers. Wied made several stops to greet voters before addressing them on stage.
Wied said Tuesday was a “great night.”
“Voters across Wisconsin’s 8th Congressional District, Northeastern Wisconsin, where I’ve lived my whole life and will live the rest of my life, just showed that we believe in good old fashioned Wisconsin common sense over Democrats radical, socialist ideology,” said Wied.
On his defeat, Democratic challenger Rick Crosson said, “Obviously, I’m disappointed with the ultimate outcome but if I look at the positives, we definitely closed a very significant gap from previous races.” Crosson added he was “definitely happy” to see David Crowley won Wisconsin’s governorship.
Wied’s supporters at Tuesday’s watch party cited his record and his personality for reasons why he received their vote.
“He is an honest man. He supports people like me and my husband who are farmers. Some of the bills that he has been working on, like the real butter act is important to us,” said Sue Bornemann.
“He’s hard-working. He believes in this country and he’s an ordinary person,” said Judy Dejardin.
While addressing his supporters, Wied also thanked his opponent, Rick Crosson.
“I also want to thank my opponent for his service to our country and his willingness to step forward and run for office. As you know, I’m a political outsider. Just two years ago I stepped into this arena for the first time, and I can tell you that it’s not easy,” said Wied.
With Democrats taking control in the U.S. House of Representatives, would Congressman Wied change his approach with Republicans in the minority?
“No, not at all. I mean, again, my job is to focus locally. This is the house of representatives. It’s called the House of the People. And my job is to focus on what matters here in Northeastern Wisconsin,” said Wied.
Wied was first elected in 2024 with 57.2% of the vote. Crosson previously served on Green Bay’s school board.
In September, Wied pointed to accomplishments made during his first term in office in areas including tax relief, border security and advocating on behalf of the dairy industry.
