LAKE WINNEBAGO, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) – Day four of sturgeon spearing in 2021 saw the lowest harvest totals so far, according to the Department of Natural Resources.
Along the Winnebago System, 124 fish were speared Tuesday with 97 on Lake Winnebago and 27 on the Upriver Lakes.
The registration station with the most fish registered along Lake Winnebago was Grundman Lane with 24 fish.
So far, 996 fish in total have been speared on the Winnebago system.
706 of those fish this season have been harvested on Lake Winnebago, consisting of 119 juvenile females, 320 adult females, and 267 males.
The Upriver Lakes has a season total of 35 juvenile females, 66 adult females, and 189 males for 290 total fish speared.
The DNR says Lake Winnebago’s harvest total remains at less than 50% for each sex-specific cap and its season may last the full 16 days.
For the Upriver Lakes harvest cap, only 20 adult females and 27 males remain to reach the 90% cap. 27 fish, including 1 juvenile female, 10 adult females, and 16 males were speared Tuesday.
450 adult females and 597 males are needed to reach Lake Winnebago’s 90% harvest cap.
Per the DNR, the Upriver Lakes cap could potentially be reached any day this week.
The Upriver Lakes saw two fish speared that were over 145 pounds with Richard Laurens spearing a 150.5 pound, 80.1 inch F4 Female, and Larry Mirsberger with a 145.9 pound, 74.4 inch sturgeon hours later. Both fish were speared on Lake Poygan.
46 fish over 100 pounds have been speared along the Winnebago system, said the DNR.
