GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ) — A crosswalk enforcement effort will be held across Brown County in the coming months.
The first enforcement event is Thursday.
Officers will be stationed at crosswalks in Allouez, Bellevue, Denmark, De Pere, and Green Bay to enforce crosswalk safety and yielding for crossing pedestrians.
Local law enforcement has partnered with Wello, a community non-profit, and their “Yield to Your Neighbor” Campaign.
“It’s not an excuse for officers to give out tickets,” said Mario Gonzales, Wello’s Communications and Marketing Manager. “It’s really to remind people of the law, which is when you see a pedestrian in the crosswalk, we yield to them.”
Green Bay Police Commander Kevin Warych says that’s the reason why they’re telling residents where police will be beforehand.
“We’re saying where we’re going to be, what we are doing, and the reason why we are doing it so we don’t have to give tickets,” said Warych. “We just want compliance.”
The next two events will be held in July and August.
