LUXEMBERG, WI (WTAQ) – Next week is Tornado and Severe Weather Awareness Week in Wisconsin, and Kewaunee County Emergency Management will be testing its mass emergency notification system, RaveAlert, for drills.
“We encourage residents to sign up for that, because it will give you Kewaunee County-specific information,” said Director of Kewaunee County Emergency
Management, Tracy Nollenberg. “Let’s say we had to open an alternate shelter location, or if there was a road that was closed, that’s information that we can send out to those that register, utilizing that system…It would still be utilized to notify residents of a tornado warning. We also encourage them to sign up for a weather alert through whatever weather app they want to download to their smartphone.”
Statewide tornado drills are planned for 1:45 p.m. and 6:45 p.m. the afternoon of April 7th.
“We do encourage our residents to participate in both drills. The 1:45 is great for when you’re at work during the day, and students will be practicing at school. In the evening, we encourage all of those at home to again practice what they would do the event of severe weather,” Nollenberg said. “It’s important for individuals who are out and about to be aware of severe weather that is coming out towards our area, especially when they’re outdoors. You’ve got kids that participate in outdoor sports…Just to be aware that if we were to experience a warning due to something being sighted in our area, knowing what the procedures are, and what their plans are to do to get to safety.”
To register, visit the Kewaunee County website at and click on the red “Stay Informed!” button at the bottom of the home page.
Also, outdoor warning sirens will NOT be sounded in Kewaunee County on drill day due to testing this alternative method of communication.
