MILWAUKEE, WI (WSAU) — A lawusit filed with the IRS is questioning Summerfest’s status as a non-profit organization.
Lawyer Eddie Greim filed the suit, saying the tax-exempt status of the music festival prevents them from paying taxes that other large events are required to fork over.
Greim cites low ticket prices and non-compete restrictions on performers playing the Milwaukee area again for some time after they play Summerfest, according to a report from FOX 6 Milwaukee.
Others have argued that Summerfest has grown away from its roots as a community event to promote cultures in Milwaukee.
Milwaukee World Festival INC, which runs Summerfest, has not commented on the issue but says they will cooperate with an investigation if asked to.
