OCONTO FALLS, WI (WTAQ) — There’s high fire danger in Wisconsin this week.
Richard Lietz with the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources says weather conditions mean a small fire can quickly get out of hand.
“Dry vegetation, primarily in the spring when things are not quite green yet, and then with the weather system coming through, we expect higher winds,” explained Lietz.
The fire danger map on the DNR’s website shows the entirety of northeast Wisconsin in the yellow fire danger category, signifying a “high” fire danger.
Lietz says you should ideally avoid burning right now, especially when it comes to yard waste.
“Consider alternative, like taking your brush to yard waste facilities or waiting until conditions improve,” said Lietz.
Whenever you burn, check dnr.wi.gov beforehard to see if you need a permit in your county.
