OSHKOSH, WI (WTAQ) — A new exhibit at the EAA Aviation Museum showcases a major piece of America’s military aviation history.
The centerpiece of the exhibit is a Chance Vought F4U-4 Corsair, a propeller driven fighter plane.
“The Corsair flew from the end of World War 2 through the Korean War. It’s probably best known from the TV series ‘Baa Baa Black Sheep’,” said EAA’s Dick Knapinski. “It was one of the last propeller driven fighters out there, as the late 40s and early 50s ushered the jet era in.”
The Corsair has been owned by EAA for some time, but Knapinski says it’s been repainted for the occasion.
“It’s been repainted in Korean War era colors, and we’ve added the markings of Thomas Hudner, who was a medal of honor recipient, and Jesse Brown, who was the first black naval aviator,” said Knapinski.
The aircraft is actually one of the places that replaced the Corsair involved in an incident during the Korean war in which Hudner intentionally crash-landed his plane to rescue Brown, the act that led to his medal of honor.
The exhibit will be officially dedicated on Saturday at 11.
