STURGEON BAY, WI (WTAQ) — A Door County business is celebrating Ukrainian Independence day.
Door County Candle Company is owned by Christiania Trapani, a Ukrainian-American who, along with her family, was distraught when Ukraine was invaded by Russia earlier this year.
“In that moment I was like ‘lets make a Ukraine candle fundraiser and donate all the profits from that candle to a non-profit helping those in Ukraine’,” Trapani, who still has relatives in the Eastern European Country, told WTAQ Tuesday.
The business has raised $700,000 for Razom for Ukraine, through the sale of their Ukrainian-flag-colored candles.
“The fact they we’ve been able to donate that is incredible,” Trapani said. “Our goal was to raise a million dollars by independence day, which was a very ambitious goal, and we’re gaining on it, but we’re not quite there yet. What we want is to raise what we can.”
The Sturgeon Bay-based Door County Candle Company will be livestreaming a candle lighting in honor of Ukraine’s independence day Wednesday at 5:30 on Facebook Live.
