GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) – With four months to go in the shipping season, Port of Green Bay officials say the amount of cargo that has moved through the facility is near the amount through the same date in 2021.
Port officials say the 1.1 million tons of cargo is slightly lower than last year’s number through the end of August.
Last month’s 280,224 tons was up from July, but down from the more than 330,000 tons in August 2021.
“Like most shipping seasons, we are seeing some ups and downs in the monthly shipping of commodities through the Port,” port director Dean Haen said in a news release. “With another four months of cargo traffic on the Great Lakes-St. Lawrence Seaway system, we remain cautiously optimistic we will hit our annual target of 2 million tons of cargo.”
Limestone imports trail last year by about 7.4%. Through the end of August, 365,930 tons have moved through the port, with more than 84,000 of that coming last month.
Petroleum imports total 171,660 tons so far this year, with 61.459 of that coming in August. A little more than 5,000 tons were exported last month.
About 34,000 tons of coal moved through the port last month. Shipments are up 85% year-over-year to 108,821 tons.
In August, 24 ships moved through the port, for a yearly total of 98. There were 103 through the end of August 2021.
