NEENAH, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) – The Neenah Rockets took to the field at Neenah’s Shattuck Stadium for the final time Tuesday.
The stadium hosted its final football game after 90 years when the seventh- and eighth-grade teams from Shattuck Middle School took on Kimberly Tuesday night.
The 1,500-seat stadium opened in 1932 after S.F. Shattuck donated 10 acres of land to the Neenah Joint School District.
Neenah High School played its varsity games at the stadium for 50 years before moving to Rocket Stadium in 1982. Middle school teams continued to play at Shattuck, though.
The two remaining home games for the middle school teams this season will be played at Rocket Stadium. This change is due to the lack of lights at Shattuck.
School officials say that while the stadium is historic, it’s time to say goodbye.
“It’s been fun to still have our middle schools play here for the last 40 years since the new stadium opened at the high school,” said Neenah School District Communications Director Jim Strick, “but its just been one of those things where even our grandstand is kind of falling apart a little bit, so it’s just time to move on.”
Shattuck Middle School will close after this school year, as the current high school becomes the new Neenah Middle School.
The school board approved selling the Shattuck property to NorthPointe Development, which plans to develop housing on the site.
The new high school property will include a new football stadium.
