GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ) — The 34th Annual Give-A-Kid-A-Book Campaign is coming up; just in time for the holidays. The campaign kicks off in the Youth Services Department of the Brown County Central Library on Wednesday, November 2, at 9 a.m. Community Engagement Manager for the Brown County Library, Sue Lagerman, says the goal of Give-A-Kid-A-Book is to have community members donate new, unwrapped books for kids ages 0-18. Those books are then distributed to parents of low income households to give to their children.
“It’s a heartwarming event, but it’s also very important to promote literacy” said Lagerman. “Many children don’t have books in their homes, and that’s what Give-A-Kid-A-Book tries to diminish”.
Give-A-Kid-A-Book serves about 52-59 hundred children per year, and each child is usually able to receive two books.
To donate, individuals can purchase books from the Friends’ Amazon Wish List (tinyurl.com/GiveAKidABookWishlist), or from Lion’s Mouth Bookstore, 211 N. Washington Street in downtown Green Bay.
Barnes & Noble in-store purchases can be donated during the Holiday Book Drive, November 1 – December 9. Use code 12633376 at the in-store Book Fair on Saturday, November 19, 2022, from 10 a.m. – 4 p.m., or online November 19-23, and a percentage of sales will benefit Give-A-Kid-A-Book.
Online shoppers can ship books purchased directly to the library. Drop book donations in collection boxes located at Nicolet National Banks in the greater Green Bay area, all Brown County Libraries, and various other locations throughout the community through December 10.
Monetary donations can also be made to the program. The library uses these funds to purchase books in categories that are needed. Checks should be made payable to “Friends of the Brown County Library: GAKAB,” and mailed to 515 Pine Street, Green Bay, WI 54301-5194.
