BROWN COUNTY, WI (WTAQ) — When you “fall back” on Sunday, the Green Bay Metro Fire Department and Brown County Public Health are encouraging residents to check their carbon monoxide detectors.
The colder months approaching bring more carbon monoxide related emergencies then compared to the rest of the year. This is due to heat appliances used to warm houses such as furnaces, wood-burning stoves, and more that can output carbon monoxide.
Symptoms of carbon monoxide poisoning can include headache, dizziness, and fatigue. In high exposure levels, carbon monoxide can cause death within minutes.
Green Bay Metro Fire Department’s Life Safety Educator and Public Information Officer, Shauna Walesh, gave some advise involving carbon monoxide detectors. “If there’s a battery, change it, because it needs to be changed out every year. Press the test button to make sure it’s working properly, and also see how old it is” said Walesch.
On average, carbon monoxide poisoning sends about 500 Wisconsinites to the emergency room each year.
