DE PERE, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — A man was arrested Monday after barricading himself inside a Walmart bathroom with two large knives.
The De Pere Police Department says it received a call for a welfare check at the Walmart Supercenter on Lawrence Drive shortly after 9:30 a.m. Monday. Police say the man had been “behaving erratically in the store, making strange comments and falling into the shelves.” He appeared to be intoxicated in some capacity.
Officers made contact with the man inside the stores and saw that he had two knives. The man was allegedly non-compliant, ran to the back of the store and barricaded himself in the store’s bathroom.
Because the man was armed and had barricaded himself, reinforcements were called to the scene.
The store was shut down and evacuated.
By Monday afternoon, police said the situation was contained but not resolved.
After a lengthy standoff, the man was arrested and transported to a local hospital for evaluation and treatment.
De Pere police say criminal charges have not yet been determined and will depend on the outcome of the ongoing investigation.
No employees or members of the public were injured in the incident.
The Walmart store reopened Monday afternoon.
