GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ) — 150 pinwheels will be displayed beginning Friday outside Willow Creek Child Advocacy center in Green Bay as part of the Pinwheels for Prevention campaign.
April is Child Abuse Prevention Month; the number of pinwheels represents the number of children assisted at the facility since the start of this year.
The pinwheel is a national symbol of Child Abuse Prevention and represents the carefree and joyful nature of children.
Holli Fisher, Director of Family Services of Northeast Wisconsin, says roughly 5,000 suspected cases of child abuse are reported in Brown County in a typical year.
“This includes physical, sexual, neglect, drug-endangered children, witnesses to crime,” said Fisher. “Unfortunately there are a lot of unsafe situations.”
Family Services hopes the pinwheel display will call attention to the importance of early intervention for victims, as well as prevention programs to ensure that parents have the proper knowledge, skills, and resources they need to care for their children.
Community involvement is encouraged. You can participate by planting pinwheels in your own yard, volunteering at a local event, or spreading the word about the campaign on social media.
