DOOR COUNTY, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — A Door County high school student has been arrested for allegedly sending an email to a group students, telling them they were on a hit list.
An 18-year-old Southern Door High School student was arrested Friday for allegedly sending the threatening email last weekend.
The student allegedly created a “fictitious email account posing as someone else” to send the email to students.
The Door County Sheriff’s Office was notified of the potential threat on Sunday.
The Southern Door School District notified families as the sheriff’s office began its investigation. Throughout the process, the sheriff’s office says there was an increased security presence at the school.
Law enforcement is recommending the following charges to the Door County District Attorney’s Office: terrorist threats and unlawful use of computerized communication systems.
A bond hearing was held at 1 p.m. on Friday, and officials say additional charges may still be coming.
The investigation continues, with the sheriff’s office saying they need to conduct more interviews and analyze several electronic devices.
The sheriff’s office says that all threats will be treated as credible until proven otherwise and that the office is committed to the safety of students, facility and visitors at Door County schools.
The Southern Door County School District said it would not provide any additional comment beyond the sheriff’s media release but said, “The school takes student safety very seriously and would like to thank all individuals and agencies involved in resolving this case.”
