WEST BEND, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — The suspect in an alleged Winneconne road rage shooting died in a crash following a short pursuit with West Bend police.
Police identified the man as 73-year-old Donald Lucero of Winneconne.
The West Bend Police Department says just after 5 p.m. Wednesday, they received a request from Winnebago County to check an address in West Bend for a male suspect wanted in connection with a shooting.
When officers located Lucero’s vehicle and attempted to make contact with him, he drove off and led officers on a chase.
A short time later, police say Lucero crashed on U.S. Highway 45, just north of the Park Avenue overpass. Police arrived at the vehicle to find him dead. No one was else was hurt in the crash.
The chase covered about a mile and a half.
Lucero was wanted after a shooting at Lake Winneconne Park. Wednesday afternoon, the victim told police he confronted a man following a road rage dispute. The man then shot him several times. The victim was able to drive away, stopping at a nearby dental office for help.
The shooting prompted all Winneconne schools and the village hall to go into lockdown while police searched for Lucero.
Winneconne police have said they don’t know the relationship between Lucero and victim, or if road rage was in fact the cause.
Police said Wednesday the victim’s condition was unknown but he was conscious and talking when he went to the hospital.
