KAUKAUNA, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — Workers in the Fox Valley are being recognized, after enrolling in the apprentice program for a local union.
It was “signing day,” at UA 400 in Kaukauna.
Dressed in blue denim shirts, dozens of new apprentices are waiting for the ceremony to begin.
“I’m a little nervous. I’m not sure what to expect, but it’s definitely exciting,” said Phillip Lopez, HVAC-R Service Apprentice.
Phillip Lopez moved to the area last year, with 13 years experience working in residential heating and cooling. Now, he’s a first year HVAC-R Service Apprentice at Bassett Mechanical. The area company works with United Association 400. The union represents pipe fabricators, plumbers, steam fitters, and service technicians in Northeast Wisconsin. On Friday, Business Manager Doug Dokey welcomed the new class.
“You don’t have to go to college to make and have a great career and make a great living. This is kind of our way of showing them, ‘hey, you’re just as important as these athletes who are signing, and getting in. You’re signing with us,’” said Doug Dokey, UA 400 Business Manager.
Dokey says trade labor is in high demand.
“Probably looking at about 60-80,000 manpower shortage across the nation,” he said.
How are conditions in Northeast Wisconsin?
“We’re a little short. We’re bringing people in. If you’re a pipe welder, or a plumber, and you’re interested, we’ll find you a spot,” said Dokey.
Dokey says those in the five-year program get paid to work and learn. About 50 apprentices from 28 different companies were recognized. Bassett Mechanical has 11 apprentices, including Phillip Lopez.
“The main thing for me, would be just give it a shot. I didn’t know much about the union before I got over here. I’ve heard good things. I’ve heard bad things. But I didn’t let that kind of sway my decision. It’s kind of come over, check it out, talk to the people, and kind of go from there,” he said.
It is the 4th Annual Apprentice Signing Day.
On a larger scale, the program is growing.
According to the Wisconsin Department of Workforce Development, there are 15,937 registered apprentices across the state, which is a record.
