GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — The Green Bay Area Public School District is targeting a spring referendum of about $150 million, with the big-ticket item a new west-side elementary school to replace several existing schools.
The projects included in the vote would be the latest steps as the district copes with shrinking enrollment and projected budget deficits, while a study committee recommended widespread changes across the district to reduce the number of buildings.
Among the preliminary projects recommended for inclusion:
- Build a new elementary school adjacent to the current Kennedy to serve students now attending Kennedy, Keller, and MacArthur
- Security improvements at multiple schools
- Deferred maintenance projects at multiple schools
- Modify West High to also accommodate the John Dewey Academy of Learning, as well as district offices
- Several other projects, including an auditorium at Red Smith School, kitchens & commons expansion at Lombardi Middle, and improvements at Aldo Leopold
The 10-page document posted as part of Monday’s school board agenda does not include specific price tags for the items listed above. It also does not include the financial impact on tax rate if such a measure were approved.
The referendum has not been scheduled but may be held with the April 2, 2024 general election.
On Monday, the board will also review proposals to close Keller Elementary — sending those students to Kennedy — and close Tank Elementary — sending those students to Lincoln. That would be in addition to a previous decision to close Wequiock Elementary at the end this academic year.
The school board meets at 5:30 p.m. Monday at the district office, 200 S. Broadway, Green Bay, in room 331.
