WINNECONNE, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — A welfare check in Winneconne led to two people being arrested on drug charges.
On Monday, police officers responded to a local establishment to conduct a welfare check on a 34-year-old woman from the Winneconne area. The anonymous reporting party said the woman had failed to pick up her young child for pre-arranged parental duties, and no one had heard from the woman in some time. Individuals who knew the woman were concerned for her safety, reporting she was known to use drugs and alcohol.
When police arrived on scene, they made contact with the woman in a rental unit at the establishment. Authorities said several contraband items were discovered in plain sight, strewn around the living area. A 49-year-old man from the Wausau area was “passed out” in a bed inside the unit.
“In a room to the rear of the rental, officers quickly located a makeshift crack cocaine base cooking/extraction area that consisted of cocaine, a propane burner, mixing/cutting compounds, packaging materials, tools, and a copious number of other forms of drug paraphernalia in the room,” a news release states.
Both the man and woman were arrested and taken to the Winnebago County Jail. Recommended charges include:
- Manufacturing of cocaine (base)
- Maintaining a drug dwelling
- Possession of cocaine (2nd+ offense)
- Possession of THC (2nd+ offense)
- Possession of drug paraphernalia
- Child neglect – harm did not occur
“We would sincerely like to thank the anonymous tipster who not only allowed for us to get a small operation shut down and some illicit drugs off our streets, but specifically, it opened the door for resources to be directed to the individual families involved in this matter, so treatment and juvenile protective services are a given a path going forward,” the release says.
Anyone who sees suspicious activity is asked to call the Winnebago County Crime Stoppers tip line at (920) 231-TIPS. You can remain anonymous and may be eligible for a reward.
