GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — Green Bay Metro Fire says firefighters continue to put out a business fire that’s been active for more than 24 hours.
A fire broke out at Green Bay Converting at 2200 Larsen Road Monday morning.
“We’ve had numerous resources just called to this area, so just to include we’ve had outside of Brown County, believe we’ve had Manitowoc, Outagamie, possibly Winnebago too. So, we’ve had resources near and far northeast Wisconsin,” said Lt. Shauna Walesh with Green Bay Metro Fire Department.
The winds not only fueled the fire but also sent smoke and debris miles away, resulting in a shelter-in-place order within a 3/4 mile radius. That has since been lifted Tuesday.
Since Monday night, the fire expanded further into the warehouse of Green Bay Converting, which stores paper products. Parts of the roof and building have collapsed as well. Smoke and fire damage affected other buildings of the business.
According to Interim Co-Chief Ray Fuiten, “We are able to get our drones up to assist with situational awareness. We have had to move some of our resources around to better mitigate the fire. Fire right now is still mainly on the warehouse section right here behind me where you can see the crews fighting fire and crews are trying to keep the water and nearby exposure is protected.”
The cause of the fire remains under investigation. Lt. Shauna Walesh says it’s been difficult to investigate the cause while the fire is still burning.
She added, “Biggest goals to get the fire out, try to reset, get, you know, some of our assisting agencies back to their areas. And then, you know, pick up the pieces and then follow through with the investigation and see what that has to say.”
Fire officials don’t know the cause of this fire and they can’t put an estimate on the loss, but they do say based on the size and personnel needed it’s comparable to the 1999 Leicht Stock fire, the costliest fire in Green Bay history.
No one was in the building at the time of the fire. Crews were dispatched through the fire alarm system.
