APPLETON, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — The school board for the Appleton Area School District voted Monday to update several attendance policies.
The district decided to revise its attendance policy after noticing inconsistencies while reviewing the policies this school year. The review came while the district was changing its policy due to the truancy citations permitted by the Appleton Common Council.
“The intent is just to be more accurate in terms of our attendance taken,” said AASD Superintendent Greg Hartjes.
The updates are as follows:
- Certain homebound students with significant health issues will not be subject to truancy citations
- Elementary-aged students will be considered absent if they arrive after 8:45 a.m. Previously, each school decided for itself.
- Open-enrolled students who are habitually truant or chronically absent may be returned to their local districts if they don’t improve attendance.
“It’s something we may take to a family and say, ‘You know, you’re really struggling for your child to make it to school. It might be better for your student to go back to your home district,'” said Hartjes. “And we don’t do that in the middle of the semester. We would do it in the end of the semester.”
Hartjes said the first two changes are merely changing policies to reflect what the district is already practicing.
