GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — 20 beagles from the embattled Ridglan Farms arrived at the Wisconsin Humane Society’s Green Bay campus Monday evening.
The dogs will first move in with foster families to be nursed back to health before being put up for adoption.
“How they’ve been treated, I think they need a good home, and they’re going to get one at our house. I know that,” said foster parent Steve Wilke.
Follows violent animal rights protest
These nearly two dozen beagles are among the roughly 1,500 that were freed from the Ridglan Farms breeding, research and testing facility in Dane County. The dogs were purchased by a national animal welfare organization after a violent protest last month.
“It could take days, it could take weeks, it could take months,” said Corey Viars with the WHS’ Green Bay and Door County locations. “It could, I mean, hopefully it won’t take years, but we’re prepared.”
The dogs will be spayed or neutered, nursed back to health and receive behavioral training. Once they’re healthy and trained, they’ll be available for adoption. Officials said even though these beagles were bred for research, they should behave like any other dog once they’re trained.
Another 25 beagles will arrive in Green Bay later this week.
“I think this is going to be an adoption,” said Wilke.
While the dogs are all set with foster families, WHS is still looking for people to eventually adopt the pups. The beagles’ foster families will have first priority, but after that, it’s first come, first serve.
If you’re interested in adoption, follow the Green Bay branch of the Wisconsin Humane Society’s website and Facebook. WHS is also looking for foster families for other animals and donations of soft dog treats and canned dog food.
