NEOPIT, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — 24-year-old Louis Tucker and 21-year-old Nyomi Acosta were sentenced for child neglect last month, the U.S. Department of Justice announced.
Tucker will spend 3 years in federal prison for child neglect. After his prison term, he will spend another 3 years on supervised release. Tucker pled guilty in February; he was sentenced in May.
Acosta will spend a year and a day in prison for the same offense. However, she will also then spend 3 years on supervised release. Acosta also pled guilty in February and was sentenced in May.
Tucker and Acosta were charged late last year with child abuse and neglect.
According to court records, tribal social services and police learned of potential child abuse of a then 8-month-old child. The alleged crimes happened during a 3-week period in September and October 2025. Authorities observed bruises and burns on the child as well as broken bones.
The two were also accused of failing to give the child medical care as they were responsible for the child’s welfare.
“It is heartbreaking that this very little child suffered so greatly due to neglect by people who were supposed to care for and protect them,” said First Assistant U.S. Attorney Brad Schimel. “Acts that result in serious harm to a child deserve prison, and thankfully the court saw it that way.”
The Menominee Tribal Police and FBI investigated the case.
