GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — All cats inside a downtown Green Bay pet sanctuary were safely evacuated after the roof collapsed from heavy rainfall Wednesday.
Around 6:30 p.m. during the On Broadway Farmers Market, firefighters were dispatched to Safe Haven Pet Sanctuary at 153 N Broadway for a roof collapse.
During this time, Green Bay had been experiencing heavy rainfall and hail.
Upon arrival, firefighters found a section of the facility’s roof had collapsed due to excessive water accumulation from the storm.
Around 7:15 p.m. Wednesday, Safe Haven Pet Sanctuary’s Facebook posted an update on the situation; saying that the first floor had flooded.
Rescue teams immediately evaluated the structure, consulting with structural engineers to ensure the safety of the staff and firefighters to evacuate the animals inside. Firefighters worked alongside sanctuary volunteers to get the cats out of the building and relocate them to temporary housing with volunteers. The shelter has since said that no more fosters are needed.
No injuries to staff, volunteers, firefighters or animals were reported.
In addition to Safe Haven Hope Center, a homeless shelter that partners with the pet sanctuary, Animal House of Green Bay and Oak View Veterinary Hospital assisted with the cats.
The incident remains under review, and the sanctuary plans to work with building professionals to evaluate the full extent of the damage.
