OSHKOSH, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — Oshkosh Police seized more than 600 fireworks last week. Police estimate the fireworks are worth $29,000.
Last Friday, police were alerted to a fireworks stand on the 800 Block of North Washburn Street believed to be selling illegal fireworks. Police performed an interdiction detail the next day.
The interdiction included inspecting the stand, which uncovered the stand was selling fireworks in violation of municipal code. The business had an actual stand, but the illegal fireworks were being sold out of a separate trailer parked away from the fireworks stand.
Oshkosh Police confirmed with employees that fireworks were being sold from the trailer in violation of local law.
In the city of Oshkosh, legal fireworks include the following:
- Sparklers
- Stationary cones and fountains
- Toy snakes
- Smoke bombs
- Caps
- Noise makers
- Confetti poppers (with less than 1/2 grain of explosive
The following are illegal in Oshkosh
- Roman candles
- Firecrackers
- Bottle rockets
- Mortars
Additionally, Oshkosh Police listed “anything which explodes or leaves the ground,” among the list of illegal fireworks. Though such fireworks are legal to individuals or groups with a government issued permit.
