(WTAQ-WLUK) — The Wisconsin Republican gubernatorial primary has a frontrunner in Tom Tiffany.
Across the aisle, the field is more crowded, and the picture is less clear. Many Democratic voters still aren’t quite sure who to cast their ballot for in August.
“Remember, way back in March at our last poll, we had 65% undecided in the Democratic primary at that point and we still have quite a few folks undecided now,” said Charles Franklin, Marquette Law School Poll Director.
The latest Marquette Law School poll now puts the number of undecided democrats at 45%. One factor is the evolving field.
“At this time, I’m undecided, due to the recent changes of who’s on the ticket. I do just have to do a little bit more research on the two candidates that are now sticking in my path of what I need to vote for,” said Shannon Pikka of De Pere.
Another issue is the large quantity of candidates.
“The vast majority of those candidates really haven’t done anything to distinguish themselves. So, I think really, it’s just been a very small number of the candidates that I’ve really felt compelled to even look at closely,” said Scott Winkler of Hobart.
Even so, Winkler says he’s ready to vote, “I have decided on the candidate I will vote for. She definitely supports policies that I’m aligned with. She comes out of a tradition within the Democratic Party that I’ve really been drawn to for a number of years.”
Are Democratic voters confident the party will rally behind the winner of the primary?
“We’ll definitely rally around whoever wins the candidacy on that. I’m not too troubled by the fact that we have multiple names on the ticket,” said Pikka.
Voters say its important to vote in August’s primary and November’s general election.
