Kewaunee County considers making half-cent sales tax permanent, ending sunset dates

KEWAUNEE, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) – Kewaunee County’s sales tax may not expire at the end of the year as planned – and could become permanent.

The county instituted the half-cent sales tax on April 1, 2017. It was extended in 2021 until the end of this year in the wake of the closure of the nuclear power plant.

The County Board reviewed the first reading of the ordinance earlier this week. A final vote could come at the Aug. 18 meeting, according to Clerk Jamie Annoye.

Although the board has previously set two sunset dates, the current proposal does not include an expiration date, Annoye said.

The tax collected $161,307 in May, for a year-to-date total then of $602,397, according to Finance & Public Property Committee minutes.
