MARIBEL, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — Two Manitowoc County rest areas along I-43 are about to reopen with a new look.
Over the past 16 months, Safety Rest Areas near Denmark and Maribel underwent renovations.
A $12.5 million grant from the INFRA program was used to modernize the 44-year-old safety rest areas with new facilities, each including two adult changing stations and expanded truck parking to help alleviate the national truck parking shortage.
On Tuesday, the Wisconsin DOT and the Wisconsin Motor Carrier Association showed off those renovations with a ribbon cutting. The rest areas will reopen to the public Wednesday.
According to the WisDOT, more than 22,000 travelers use this corridor of I-43 each day.
Open year-round, Wisconsin has 28 Safety Rest Areas located on the interstate highway system and other major four-lane highways.
