(WISCONSIN TIMBER RATTLERS) BELOIT – The Wisconsin Timber Rattlers needed a win on Sunday for a series victory over the Beloit Sky Carp at ABC Supply Stadium. The Rattlers got the win behind solid pitching and a big offensive inning to defeat the Sky Carp 9-2.
Edgardo Ordόñez drove a double up the first base line with two on and two out in the top of the second to knock in two runs for Wisconsin (57-46 overall, 23-18 second half) to take a 2-0 lead. Ordόñez had been 1-for-13 as a Rattler since joining the team before that big hit. He would finish the day 2-for-4 with a walk and a well-called game as the starting catcher.
Daniel Dickinson made it 3-0 with a one-out, solo home run in the top of the third.
Beloit (52-55, 25-17) got on the scoreboard with their first hit off Wisconsin starting pitcher Daniel Corniel. Jacob Jenkins-Cowart hit a two-out, solo home run in the bottom of the third to cut into the Wisconsin lead.
The Sky Carp’s second hit of the game was a triple by Wilfredo Lara to start the bottom of the fifth. Chase Jaworsky drove in Lara with a ground out to second.
The Timber Rattlers bats stepped on the gas in the top of the sixth with five runs to give the pitchers some breathing room. Tayden Hall launched a lead-off homer to right, his eleventh home run of the season with the Rattlers. Luis Peña stepped to the plate with runners at first and second and drove an RBI single to right. Later in the inning, Dickinson was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to force in a run. Eric Bitonti added a run with a sacrifice fly. Braylon Payne scored the final run of the inning when he raced home from third on a wild pitch.
Corniel left after an efficient five innings of work. He allowed two hits, walked none, and struck out one while needing just 53 pitches. That put him in line for his first Midwest League win.
Wande Torres took over for the bottom of the sixth inning. He allowed hits to the first two batters he faced before getting a strikeout and a double play to shut down the Beloit scoring threat. Torres, who earned the win in game one of the series on August 4 with seven solid innings, struck out five in three scoreless innings in the series finale.
Dickinson added another RBI with a two-out, run-scoring single in the top of the eighth. Dickinson was on base five times on Sunday with two hits, two walks, and a hit batsman. He knocked in three runs and scored one. Sunday was Dickinson’s 22nd multi-hit game.
Michael Fowler closed out the game with a perfect ninth inning.
The Timber Rattlers won four of the six games in the series at Beloit. They have pulled back to within 1-1/2 games of the Sky Carp for the second half West Division playoff spot with 24 games remaining on their schedule.
The Timber Rattlers are off on Monday. They return to action on Tuesday for the start of the second leg of their two-week road trip. Wisconsin will play the Cedar Rapids Kernels at Veterans Memorial Stadium starting at 6:35pm on Tuesday.
