Appeals court to hear Hobart’s challenge over Oneida trust land

(WTAQ-WLUK) — A federal appeals court will hear arguments next month on Hobart’s challenge to the law allowing Native American tribes to place land into trust status.

The U.S. Department of Interior granted the Oneida Nation’s application to have eight properties totaling 499 acres placed in trust for the tribe. Such actions take the lots off the property tax rolls, which is why the village objects to the move. A federal judge upheld the law, then the village appealed.

This week, the Seventh Circuit Court of Appeals in Chicago scheduled oral arguments for Oct. 30, court records show.
