(ST. NORBERT COMMUNICATIONS) WHITEWATER – St. Norbert College faced nationally ranked UW-Whitewater and dropped a 3-0 outcome in a non-conference match at Russell Arena.
The Green Knights fell to the No. 25-ranked Warhawks 25-20, 25-11, 25-23.
St. Norbert led for a good part of the opening set, including a 16-12 edge before Whitewater went on a 7-1 run to pull ahead 19-17. The Green Knights got the next point to get to within one but would get no closer in falling behind 1-0. Whitewater then jumped out to a 9-1 lead in Set 2 to take a 2-0 lead.
The third set featured 14 ties and seven lead changes. St. Norbert led 16-15 off a Brooklyn O’Malley block but would not lead again. The set was tied at 20, 21, 22 and 23 but the Warhawks would get the next point each time to hold off the Green Knights and lock up the match.
St. Norbert hit .105, with 29 kills against 18 errors in 105 attempts. Annabel Stevenson (pictured), O’Malley and Gracie Buss all had six kills apiece, while Kirsten Klatt had five. Keira Ashenfelter had 23 assists.
Maddie Kitowski had nine digs, with Ashenfelter and Anna Kudick getting seven apiece. St. Norbert rolled up 11.5 team blocks, with Klatt getting six and Kudick and O’Malley with four each.
Whitewater hit .307, with 47 kills against 16 errors in 101 swings. Gaby DiMotto finished with 17 kills to lead the Warhawks.
Player of the week honors for football: St. Norbert College junior Jacob McVane has been named the Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference’s Special Teams Player of the Week, announced today by the conference office.
McVane, a Green Bay native and Ashwaubenon High School graduate, was instrumental in St. Norbert’s 28-14 win over Wisconsin Lutheran College, scoring an 88-yard kickoff return touchdown in the third quarter. He totaled 117 yards on two returns and had 87 yards with a touchdown on the ground while catching three passes for 29 yards.
The award is the first in his career.
