PULASKI, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — Recent work to paint the outside of a Pulaski church is being recognized for being about more than just a coat of paint.
The painters will receive the Historic Preservation Award from the Pulaski Area Historical Society next month.
Holy Cross Polish National Catholic Church sits just off the main street in Pulaski.
The parish and the building are more than 100 years old.
For parishioners like Pauline Nooyen, it’s the only church they’ve ever known.
“I was baptized here. I went to communion. I made confirmation. I was married here back in 1974. So we’re coming up on 52 years, me and my husband. And it’s a beautiful little church,” said Nooyen.
But that beautiful little church was starting to show its age.
“It’s been like almost between somewhere between 40 and 50 years before it was painted. And yes, it started to look like it really needed, you know, it was peeling things,” Nooyen said.
The parish hired Boyea Painting, a family-owned business out of Green Bay, to do the work.
“We strive to work on more historical properties,” said Zach Boyea.
And the historic property needed work with a delicate hand, literally.
According to Boyea and his wife, Dani, “No pressure washing, no sandblasting, not that kind of thing. A lot of actually actual hand scraping. No power sanders. No power sanders. We had a couple of block sanders, just regular block, just to kind of smooth out some of the edges after we scraped it up. One siding at a time.”
It took more than a month to prep and paint the exterior of the church — all by hand.
But the finished product is exactly what the parish wanted.
“It’s just gorgeous,” said Nooyen. She added, “We have a few families that have been here pretty long. And like I said, even the newer families that are here, they think it’s really amazing to do this.”
The work on the church even caught the eye of the Pulaski Area Historical Society.
“For them to restore the way this church looks is exactly what Pauline said. This is part of the stories of this community,” said Pam Janssen with the historical society.
And that’s why Boyea Painting is being honored with the historical society’s Historic Preservation Award in mid-October.
“We enjoy creating relationships and working within community and bringing back properties like this one to life again. And so it’s really cool. It was an honor though to do this project. It was an absolute honor,” added the Boyeas.
And now the church is ready for its next 100 years.
