OSHKOSH, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — Two teens were arrested in Oshkosh carrying what police said were handguns stolen from an unlocked vehicle.
Police say the theft was reported on Monday. On Tuesday, officers searched a home in the 1000 block of Durfee Avenue in connection with several thefts from vehicles and a robbery.
One 16-year-old boy was found in the 1000 block of Witzel Avenue. When officers tried to make contact with him, he tried to run away. While police were trying to arrest him, the teen pulled out a 9 mm semiautomatic handgun he had concealed. Officers were able to disarm and arrest him.
One officer was injured, hitting their head on the ground. That officer was taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
Meanwhile, a 15-year-old boy was found in the home on Durfee Avenue. He also had a 9 mm semiautomatic handgun on him; police say it was stolen from the same unlocked vehicle that the 16-year-old stole a gun from.
A 46-year-old woman was also arrested at the home for bail jumping, possession of THC and contributing to the delinquency of a minor.
The names of those arrested were not released.
Anyone with information about the case is asked to contact Winnebago County Crime Stoppers at 920-231-8477, online or through the P3 smartphone app.
During the investigation, police say they were in contact with nearby Lourdes High School to keep students and staff members safe.
Oshkosh police say, since Sept. 27, there have been 33 reported cases of theft from vehicles or vehicles entered without the owner’s consent. Of those, 14 vehicles were unlocked. Three total guns were taken from vehicles, including the two from the same unlocked vehicle.
Police remind people to remove valuables from vehicles or at least keep them out of plain view, lock the doors and close windows completely. Guns that are being transported should be secured and not left in unlocked vehicles.
