MANITOWOC, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — Following five days of testimony, the Timothy Hauschultz case is now in the jury’s hands.
Jurors started their deliberations just after 1:05 p.m. Tuesday.
Hauschultz is facing six charges, accused of ordering the punishment that led to the death of 7-year old Ethan Hauschultz. Ethan was Timothy’s great-nephew, who was in his care.
The state offered a 45-minute closing argument summarizing its case. District Attorney Jaclyn LaBre reminded the jury of the expert testimony that identified the punishment of carrying wood leading up to Ethan’s death as child abuse.
The state said Timothy was the one who ordered the punishment. He was the one who picked Ethan’s 44.4-pound log, and he was the one who told his son Damian to supervise the wood carrying.
Damian is already serving a 20-year prison sentence for his involvement.
It was Damian, according to the defense in its more than 60-minute closing, who is responsible for Ethan’s death. The defense argued Timothy did everything he could to help Ethan when the boy was found unresponsive, not harm him.
