TWO RIVERS, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — A man was arrested after fleeing a traffic stop in Two Rivers and then crashing into a patrol vehicle before trying to steal another.
It all started around 10 p.m. Wednesday when Two Rivers officers stopped a vehicle in the 1500 block of 20th Street after seeing traffic violations.
During the initial contact, officers observed signs that the 29-year-old driver from Newton was impaired.
When officers instructed the driver to get out of the vehicle, he drove away and a pursuit ensued.
The pursuit continued approximately nine miles into the city of Manitowoc. During the pursuit, the driver intentionally struck a marked patrol vehicle, continued off-road in an attempt to evade officers, and ultimately crashed near the intersection of N. 10th St. and Waldo Blvd.
After the crash, the driver attempted to flee again in the disabled vehicle before exiting. The suspect then tried to steal a marked squad in an apparent effort to continue evading officers.
As the man continued to resist and attempted to gain control of a marked patrol vehicle, officers deployed a Taser and were able to safely take him into custody.
Police say they are recommending several charges, including the man’s 3rd OWI offense, fleeing or eluding an officer and recklessly endangering safety.
Three Two Rivers Police Department squad vehicles sustained damage during the incident. No officers or members of the public were injured. This incident remains under investigation.
